The Worst Foods to Order on a First Date If You Want to See Them Again

As an avid dater, I would say that I’m pretty much the most experienced and informed woman you will meet when it comes to dating advice. Or not. Hi, I don’t think we’ve met. My name’s Ava and let’s just say my high school dating life is not even a thing.

In my defense, high schoolers are just too busy with either applying to college, stressing about applying to college, or doing things to be able to apply to a well-regarded college.

But, with the help of family, friends, and common sense, I have compiled a list of foods that should be avoided at all costs during a first date. Now, this can also be a reference if you want to never get a call back. Trust me, it’ll work.

1. RIBS

screen-shot-2017-02-19-at-4-08-00-pm

Ribs are a definite no-no. There are too many negatives for this to even be debatable. For example, sticky hands, sticky fingers, sticky shirts, sticky hair, and sticky lips (yikes).

Now, I don’t want to bash ribs. I love ribs. But, there is indeed a time and place for everything. And, messy fingers are not in the equation for making a good impression. To use a quote from Shakespeare, “To barbecue or not to barbecue, that is the question.” The answer is no.

2. SUSHI

screen-shot-2017-02-19-at-4-07-31-pm

There are two things you’re probably thinking. First, that picture looks damn good (I know). Second, why is sushi on this list? Hear me out.

When you’re on a date with someone, do you use chopsticks (that you truthfully don’t know how to use, but lie to yourself thinking that this time will be different), or use your hands (accepting the awkwardness of the entire situation).

Another dilemma you could come across would be deciding whether to eat the whole piece (by shoving the whole thing in your mouth in an effort to be smooth), or eat half (realizing that the seaweed stretches too far and you have to pull it off). My recommendation, ladies and gents, would be just don’t have sushi on a first date.

3. LEAFY GREENS

screen-shot-2017-02-19-at-4-07-49-pmFor some odd reason, some people have teeth that are magnets to spinach. Listen, I get it. You’re trying to be lady-like, and act older than you are, while watching your weight. Trust me when I say, you can order the kale salad for any other time, but a date. If you do end up ordering one, either check your teeth frequently, or don’t be surprised when your date cringes when you laugh to one of his or her corny jokes.

At the end of the day, food is just a factor in a date. Ordering these food options listed above shouldn’t be a deal breaker. In fact, it could be memorable in its own disastrous way. First dates are fun. So, enjoy yourself and don’t sweat it (like literally don’t sweat it).

4. SPICEY FOODS

screen-shot-2017-02-19-at-4-07-42-pm

As a gal who prefers mild everything, reacting towards spicy food isn’t an issue I have to deal with. But, for all those spice lovers out there, save this adventure for any other date but the first.

Certain foods with crazy spices can cause embarrassing outcomes. To avoid the situation where your date asks you what you enjoy doing on your free time, and you answer by choking. Just don’t order the Sriracha Chicken with Cayenne.

An Unofficial Ranking of GoMacro Bars

(Go)ing crazy for GoMacro

GoMacro Bars are the answer to my prayers. Throughout my adolescent life, I have always struggled to find a protein bar that’s nutritious AND delicious. My high standards didn’t help my search but I tried to really look for the overall ideal protein bar. The day I had a GoMacro bar, I was hooked.

These bars have recently gained popularity in the health food world for being gluten-free, vegan, macrobiotic, and organic that have a texture like taffy and a heart of gold.

I accumulated the best tasting bars and the worst tasting bars, comparing them side by side.

Worst

1. Cherries and Berries

Screen Shot 2017-03-24 at 6.21.20 AM

I went into tasting this bar with high hopes. I love cherries and I love berries, but the texture and flavor of this bar took me by surprise. It was soft and sour which was not favorable.

2. Apple and Walnut

Screen Shot 2017-03-24 at 6.21.28 AM

Although the Apple and Walnut bar wasn’t the absolute worst, it’s almost as bad with its weird fruity flavor and texture of being too chewy.

3. Granola and Coconut

Screen Shot 2017-03-24 at 6.21.42 AM

Although this bar had promise, it failed to fall through as a yummy breakfast bar. Instead, I tasted weird oat flakes and a sort of gross tasting coconut flavor (and I love coconut so that was hard to swallow).

Best

3. Almond Butter and Carob

Screen Shot 2017-03-24 at 6.21.51 AM

I was surprisingly pleased with the flavor of Carob and its ability to blend with the almond butter. The texture wasn’t too chewy and the Carob provided a sweetness that some other bars were lacking.

2. Banana and Almond Butter

Screen Shot 2017-03-24 at 6.22.00 AM

This is the perfect bar for a power breakfast bar. The banana flavor comes through extremely well while the texture remains firm. I personally LOVE this bar because it’s simple yet satisfyingly tasty.

1. Peanut butter and Chocolate Chip

Screen Shot 2017-03-24 at 6.22.09 AM

This bar was the best one I tasted. I either eat this bar for breakfast or a snack every single day. The chocolate chips are a perfect way to incorporate flavor and the texture is like taffy. Highly recommend!

Since I was five years old, Jaxson’s Ice Cream Parlor has been a tradition for my family when a grand dessert was in order. The success of this restaurant stems from the amazing energy and over-the-top ice cream sundaes. If you ever find yourself a little north of Miami in the Dania Beach area, do yourself a favor and stop at Jaxson’s. You can thank me later.

5. Fried Oreos from The Big Pink

This classic staple can be found at Joe’s Stone Crab. If one travels to Miami for the first time, getting a slice of their famous Key Lime Pie is super duper important to experience everything the city has to offer. Trust me, you won’t regret taking a bite of the magical cream and crust of this pie.

8. Frieze Ice Cream

screen-shot-2017-02-27-at-6-17-05-pm

Right in the heart of Lincoln Road, Frieze ice cream is the perfect spot for a pick me up after a long day of shopping. This spot has refreshing sorbets, including lychee and champagne, and creative flavors that are perfect to eat on a hot day (which happens quite often in Miami). After stopping at Lululemon, go check this place out.

9. Dylan’s Candy Bar

screen-shot-2017-02-27-at-6-17-15-pm

Although fellow New Yorkers are familiar with this legendary candy shop, Floridians took their own spin on Dylan’s Candy Bar. Located on Lincoln Road, the vibe of Miami creates a colorful atmosphere that attracts everyone who passes by. With candy coated everything (seriously though, they have Kit-Kat-covered mugs), this hot spot is one to see.

10. Macarons from Ladurée

screen-shot-2017-02-27-at-6-17-22-pm

Ladurée, an asthetically-pleasing cafe that serves the most delicate desserts, is located in the design district and Lincoln Road. The French Macarons are what they are known for, because of the fact that they explode with flavor with every bite. My personal favorite is pistachio, but this quaint restaurant has many more flavors like coffee, orange blossom, lemon, and rose petal.

11. Fireman Derek’s World Famous Pies

screen-shot-2017-02-27-at-6-21-36-pm

Located in the Wynwood Art District, this hidden gem serves up sweet pies, like the classic apple and chocolate peanut butter, yet also savory pies, like the spinach and feta and the Mediterranean. After browsing the beautiful art, stop by this joint to grab a slice of literally anything. They won’t let you down.

12. Cinnamon Rolls from Knaus Berry Farm

screen-shot-2017-02-27-at-6-21-28-pm

The cinnamon rolls from Knaus Berry Farm are legendary. With a line out the wazoo (yes, I just used that word), every bite of the roll is fresh, tasty, and just amazing. I mean, look at that photo. This picture speaks louder than anything I could say.

13. Strawberry Shortcake from Icebox Cafe

screen-shot-2017-02-27-at-6-21-22-pm

Oprah has stated that “this is the best cake in America.” If that doesn’t make you go, what are you doing with your life? Seriously though, this health-conscious restaurant with a dessert bar wins at putting out the best cakes.

14. Night Owl Cookie Co.

screen-shot-2017-02-27-at-6-21-14-pm

From the birthday cake cookie to the cinnamon toast crunch cookie, Night Owl Cookie Co. serves up scrumptious cookies that are crucial to your overall well-being. I’m telling you, every single bite is warm, flavorful, and just freakin’ good, man.

15. Pastelitos from Karla’s Bakery

screen-shot-2017-02-27-at-6-21-07-pm

Karla’s Bakery offers yummy pastries to satisfy your biggest heart’s desire. This bakery has the finest Pastelitos, in my opinion, in South Florida. The array of Cuban bakeries in Miami is endless, so that’s a huge feat to accomplish.

The Best Vegetarian-Friendly Restaurants in Ft. Lauderdale

Ft. Lauderdale is home to some of the best Key Lime Pie and seafood. I feel happier even thinking about picking up my favorite shave ice after school today.

However, it’s such a struggle at times to find healthy alternatives for the foods we all know and love. So, finding the best organic and vegetarian foods that could mimic flavors of non-veg foods was up to me. And  I gladly accepted the challenge.

1. MAYAPAPAYA JUICERY & EATERY

screen-shot-2017-02-19-at-4-27-54-pm

This is my personal favorite. Not only does the place have the best tasting salads and sandwiches on the planet, but it also captures the true essence of Ft. Lauderdale.

After a sweaty day at the beach, people come in starved to the bone for a juice, smoothie bowl, or light bite. Their selection involves an array of different foods including the Brazilian Açaí Bowl, the Veggie Burrito, and the Sweet Potato Power lunch. The Portobello Salad (my favorite), has the tastiest mix of veggies in a bowl. You are doing yourself a disservice if you are in the Ft. Lauderdale area and don’t stop by.

2.GREEN BAR AND KITCHEN

screen-shot-2017-02-19-at-4-28-05-pm

This plant-based restaurant serves up a countless number of vegan replacements. If you’re in the mood to feel like a green goddess, I recommend dropping everything and going to this restaurant.

When I first came here, I was blown away by the restaurant’s ability to make any dish vegan. Whether it was the Smokehouse Burger, filled with brown rice and chickpeas, or the General TSO Tofu, Green Bar and Kitchen set the bar high for veganized foods. I personally love the Coconut Burger and the Buffalo Tempeh.

3. RAW JUICE

screen-shot-2017-02-19-at-4-28-11-pm

Our winter is hot. It’s also humid (which is not good for the hair but that’s besides the point). Instead of going for the frozen yogurt, or nitrogen ice cream that we all know and love, opting for Raw Juice’s refreshing options are the perfect guilt-free treats.

Bowls like the Superfruitchia Açaí Bowl, with goji berries and diced pineapple, and the Black Magic Bowl, with activated charcoal (no one knows what it is but you just know it’s good for you), is what brings this place to a whole other level. If you’re not into açaí bowls, there are many cold pressed juices, or organic food items to try. I recommend the Avo-Quinoa wrap, but they are all irresistible.

4. CLOVERMINT CAFE & MARKET

screen-shot-2017-02-19-at-4-28-19-pm

Clovermint Café is an Instagrammer’s dream. This photogenic spot was introduced to me from social media and gave off a completely comforting vibe. Not only does it provide the cutest backdrop, but it also serves completely raw, vegan food.

The way they mimic certain flavors that aren’t vegan, like cheese and chocolate, still amazes me, and I go A LOT. The baked ziti and avocado fries are the reason I am alive, I swear.

5. JUICE THERAPY

screen-shot-2017-02-19-at-4-28-26-pm

Located in Davie FL., this restaurant attracts people, like me, because it’s fresh and consistent. Ever since I started coming here, which was a long time ago, I left feeling light on my feet, yet satisfied.

The Greek Wrap, and Hummus and Avocado Wrap, are my two favorites. I usually pair a wrap with the refreshingly delicious Strawberry Classic Smoothie. My mom, who probably goes around three times a week, loves their vegan chili (as do I because I love everything from there).

As you can see, my challenge was put to the test, and I’m so happy I found five that were all to die for. Hopefully this list helped you, and when in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida, don’t be surprised if you spot me at one of them (I’ll probably be there).

The Best Foods to Eat Before Hot Yoga, According to My Yogi Mom

My mom is a yoga teacher. When I was younger, I wasn’t in favor of any yoga practice (partly due to my extreme inflexibility), and constantly whined when my mom made me (in the most loving way possible) take a class.

I recall some memories that consisted of me being coerced to attend drum circles, eat “different” ethnic foods, get dragged to crystal shops, and meditate with her when feeling stressed… (the last one was actually pretty nice).

img_7407

Even though I started practicing hot yoga this year, I have known my entire life that it is crucial to eat the right type of food, at the right time, in the right amount before taking on hot yoga (or any type of yoga, for that matter).

If you don’t fuel your body right, cramping, dehydration, nausea, and the occasional fart can occur (and we know we don’t want that). So here are some of my suggestions on the best foods to eat.

1. FRUIT

screen-shot-2017-02-19-at-4-23-16-pm

If you’re wanting something on the lighter side, fruits like bananas, berries, and melon are the perfect, quick bite. This refreshing snack can hold you over until afterwards, where you can eat a proper meal. If you want something a little bit more filling, you can get real cool and whip up a smoothie bowl.

2. NUT BUTTER

screen-shot-2017-02-19-at-4-23-23-pm

Nut butter and a piece of toast is nutritionally ideal before yoga. Not only is it a carb (bread) and a protein (nut butter), but it also tastes heavenly. Everyone has their preference, but Justin’s Maple Almond butter is my favorite. This combo is definitely a go to for me and my mom before we head out to a downward dog party.

3. DARK CHOCOLATE

screen-shot-2017-02-19-at-4-23-29-pm

This is my mom’s absolute favorite. I mean, if chocolate isn’t your favorite… are you even human? Dark chocolate, according to Authority Nutrition, has many health benefits that make it a good snack to have before class. It helps fight fatigue, lowers stress levels, and is filled with antioxidants.

Now, I’m not saying that a whole chocolate bar before class is a good idea, because in all honesty, that sounds like a disaster in the making. However, a bite or two will do the trick.

4. OATMEAL

screen-shot-2017-02-19-at-4-23-35-pm

As an oatmeal fanatic, this complex carb is a no brainer. Oatmeal is beneficial because it provides sustainable energy, and gives you fuel to last way longer than the actual class. When I was younger, never did I think I would like oatmeal.

But, as a mature adult (just kidding, I’m sixteen), my taste buds started to like this bowl of goodness. You can top it with pretty much anything, which makes it okay to have at any time of the day.

5. WATER

screen-shot-2017-02-19-at-4-23-46-pm

The most important tip is to drink plenty of water. Because of all the sweating that occurs during class, it is crucial to replenish your body with the liquid lost. So, bring a large water bottle to class, and hydrate! Hydration is necessary. Foods should also be consumed at least 45 minutes before, in order to prevent any cramping or nausea.

Although my relationship with yoga was rocky at first, my mom opened my eyes to a warm and welcoming yoga community. Living with a yogi/mom, I know for a fact that these are the foods that are best for a before class snack/meal. My mom and I swear by all of them (especially the dark chocolate).

See you on the mat. Namaste.

The 5 Best Foods to Boost Your Memory During Finals

And the time has come. Just like that, finals have made their way into our lives. For many of us, the stress is at an all time high. But, there is a light at the end of the tunnel. And happiness will return when you take your last final.

Since it’s time to buckle down, focus, and concentrate on the material at hand, I have listed below five foods that will help strengthen the brain, because knowing all the vocabulary for organic chemistry is not okay. Ever.

1. SALMON

screen-shot-2017-02-19-at-12-56-21-pm

Not only does Salmon make the list for being one of the most nutritious foods out there, but it also contains omega-3 fatty acids to keep your brain alert and focused. According to Dr. Axe, a well-known doctor of natural medicine, Salmon improves memory, and contains so many vitamins that your brain can only benefit from this super food. Whether eating salmon on a bagel, or eating sashimi, this bad boy will help you ace your test. I promise… unless it’s hard… then I’m sorry.

2. COCONUT OIL

screen-shot-2017-02-19-at-12-56-15-pm

Coconut oil can be used to make a lot of different kinds of dishes and in basically every meal. From being a makeup remover, to topping on a sweet potato, the number of purposes for coconut oil is actually more mind-blowing than every season finale of The Walking Dead. It contains medium-chain fatty acids, which are the perfect source for energy. The digestion of these acids by the liver creates a readily accessible energy supply to the brain. What? I’m already loco for coco(nut oil).

3. BEETS

screen-shot-2017-02-19-at-12-56-08-pm

I honestly don’t understand why beets get such a bad rap. Maybe it’s their color that stains your tongue, or the fact that their an “adult” vegetable, but I personally love them. Nitrates in the beets boost blood flow, helping mental performance.

The Quinoa Salad with Roasted Beets and Pear is my absolute favorite thing to make. I also love to pair them with goat cheese and a little balsamic dressing. Wow… now I’m seriously so excited to eat beets after I finish writing thi–. Sorry, I’m back.. I couldn’t wait. Just eat your beets!

4. WALNUTS

screen-shot-2017-02-19-at-12-56-00-pm

Walnuts are hella high in antioxidants, omega 3’s, and their triglyceride levels. Eating a handful a day will improve a person’s cognitive function, according to a study published in the Journal of the American Heart Association. This convenient snack, containing vitamin E, can also help with long-term health benefits like warding off Alzheimers disease. And with that, I couldn’t find a walkout joke so onto the last food.

5. BLUEBERRIES

screen-shot-2017-02-19-at-12-55-52-pm

Besides the fact that blueberries can be topped on pretty much anything and taste delicious, they contain the highest and largest array of antioxidants, including vitamin C, vitamin K, and fiber. They have high levels of gallic acid, which means that they are good at protecting the brain from stress and degeneration. A bunch of recipes with blueberries can be found here, and you’re good to go.

The 5 Most Useful Essential Oils

Essential oils are the answer to everything. However, many people aren’t familiar with them, which is why I’m here to explain their magical ways.

Extracted from plants, essential oils have healing properties that can improve one’s physical, mental, and emotional health. Not only do most of them smell heavenly, but they can also heal wounds, improve digestion, balance hormones, clean your home, soothe sore muscles, reduce cellulite (we like that one) etc. So if you thought you could live without them, think again.

1. LAVANDER

screen-shot-2017-02-19-at-12-51-15-pm

The first thing people usually think about when lavender comes up is the aroma. But, besides the lavender candles we all know and love, it can also be used as an effective disinfectant for cuts and scrapes.

Applying a couple drops of lavender oil onto a burn or rash can alleviate the pain while speed up the healing process. Also, applying a few drops of lavender oil to your temples can help with getting rid of a headache, as well as a few drops going into your laundry cycle for eliminating odors.

2. TREE TEA OIL

screen-shot-2017-02-19-at-12-47-39-pm

This gem of an oil is well-known for its powerful antiseptic properties, according to Dr. Axe. Tea tree oil is in tons of skincare products, mainly due to the fact that it’s awesome for acne. It can also be used alternatively to treat lice.

Tea tree oil has the ability to soothe dry flaking skin and remove dandruff. Because it provides an amazing alternative for some medicines out there, this essential oil proves itself to be a tad bit magical.

3. FRANKINCENSE

screen-shot-2017-02-19-at-12-47-51-pm

Frankincense is believed to transmit messages to the limbic system of the brain, thus influencing the nervous system. All this means is that it can help stress-relieve someone by using a few drops to soak in a bath.

This oil can also be used as an antiseptic. Disinfecting homes and cleaning indoor spaces is an option because of Frankincense’s ability to eliminate bacteria. Now I’m definitely freaking out over Frankincense.

4. EUCALYPTUS

screen-shot-2017-02-19-at-12-48-05-pm

Listen up, ladies, because this oil provides amazing nourishment for the hair. Adding a few drops to the scalp can not only remove dandruff and itchiness, but also make it shine bright. A study from NYU Medical School found that using eucalyptus was effective at treating sinusitis. If battling smelly shoes or dirty objects, this essential oil can do the trick by removing odors soaking them in oil infused wash cloths.

2. CLOVE

screen-shot-2017-02-19-at-12-48-19-pm

Clove oil can be used for multiple purposes. Not only can it treat Candida, a yeast infection, by killing intestinal parasites, but it is also popular for helping decrease toothaches. Adding some clove oil to anyones daily health routine could help immensely with boosting antioxidant levels. Clove can be put in personal care products like deodorant, toothpaste, and cleaner. All around, this oil provides pure and lasting positive effects for the body.

The Best Foods to Keep With You While Hiking

Hiking is my favorite things to do in the entire world. Not only do I achieve a natural high from the grueling workout it can be, but I also love being outdoors and exploring the wilderness. This summer, I was lucky enough to go on a trip to Bar Harbor, Maine, where we hiked the heck out of Acadia National Park’s trails.

Throughout the week, my family and I learned of the best foods to fuel anyone when hiking. The compiled list below includes the best foods to bring on a hike.

1. ENERGY BARS

screen-shot-2017-02-19-at-12-37-17-pm

Whether starting or ending a hike, energy bars are always a good go-to. I personally love Cliff Bars and Think Thin Bars, but any energy bar that contains readable ingredients that will keep you satisfied is a good choice.

2. SANDWICHES

screen-shot-2017-02-19-at-12-38-30-pm

In the midst of thinking that death was upon us from the insanely challenging switchbacks, the idea of a nice and delicious sub at the end of the trail was what got all of us through. Sandwiches are a great post-hike meal. It replenishes the body while filling you up with fuel for the trip down.

3. NUT BUTTER

screen-shot-2017-02-19-at-12-39-06-pm

These packets of heaven are the perfect snack for a hike. Light as a feather, Justin’s Nut Butters can fit into any backpack easily. High in protein, low in saturated fat, and containing the right amount of carbohydrates, I can literally live on these.

4. DRIED FRUIT

screen-shot-2017-02-19-at-12-40-30-pm

It is extremely important to replenish potassium levels while on a hike. Eating dried fruits like bananas and dates are the perfect way to regulate the fluid balance in the body. Not only do dried apple, mango, and pineapple taste sweet and tangy, but they also have a plethora of health benefits.

5. WHOLE GRAIN PITA BREAD

screen-shot-2017-02-19-at-12-41-12-pm

Whole grain pita bread is a great source of fiber, and can keep you satiated for a while. It can be paired with different foods. If craving something sweet, some peanut butter, banana, and honey can do the trick. On the other hand, a savory meal can consist of some veggies and hummus.

At the end of the day, these foods are only a few of the tons of options to bring on a hike. The most important thing to remember is that hydration is key, and to always have food on the ready. You never know when you’ll need to quickly grab something out of your bag.
